Marquis Williams is all set to Launch his New Book
​Marquis Williams is very well known for his creative designing and public speaking commitment. He is getting a reputation as a community leader due to his humble attitude. Marquis Williams has published many books and he recently won Best Rising Author and Author of Month by TYS Book Blog for his book titled “Beating The System: My Life in Foster Care”. He is now going to launch his new book titled “Motivation Madness: How to Unlock the Hidden Potential Within You”.

Southern California Sports Broadcasters Luncheon
Marquis Williams, pictured above with Lakers announcer Bill Macdonald, represented JOBE Transitional Living Program at the Southern California Sports Luncheon. Marquis attended the luncheon with Larry Stewart, his wife Norma, and Nan Wooden. This was a great networking opportunity for Marquis. He was able to promote his book "Beating the System: My Life in Foster Care." Special thanks to Larry Stewart for inviting Marquis to the luncheon!
CSUN Alumnus Marquis Williams Uses Incredible Story to Help Others
Marquis Williams ’14 (Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation Management) bounced around between 10 different foster homes, attended more than a dozen schools between the ages of 8 and 12 and held a 1.9 GPA in high school. When it came time to apply to colleges, the South Los Angeles native was denied admission from nine out of the 10 schools he applied to. The one school that saw Williams’ untapped potential was California State University, Northridge, which accepted Williams through the university’s Educational Opportunities Program (EOP).

Beating the System is a story of Marquis’ personal experience navigating the foster care system in Southern California, which he has candidly documented in the book. Congratulations Marquis!

One fan of The Fosters was invited audience guest Marquis Williams, a graduate of Cal State University at Northridge who had been in foster care from ages eight through 12 and this year published a book, Beating the System: My Life in Foster Care. “When I’m out in the world, I don’t see myself reflected too much,” said Williams, who is now pursuing an MBA at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. “I like The Fosters. It touches on issues that affect foster youth. In the foster system you have that feeling of not being wanted, that if you mess up or get in trouble in school, they’ll send you to a different home. The Fosters is normalizing real experiences.”

Our newest virtual community partner hails from Southern California. After bouncing from house to house in foster care, Marquis Williams was placed with his grandmother where he spent his formative adolescent years. He struggled through part of high school, but thanks to his grandmother and California State University, Northridge’s Educational Opportunity Program, he is now a published author. Let’s welcome community partner Marquis Williams to the spotlight!
Finding Family in High School

When Marquis found a welcoming culture of consistent family and education within his new college prep high school, he made a promise to himself to keep going and graduate. His teachers, mentors, peers and grandmother encouraged him to pursue college. Marquis translated his turbulent foster care experience into educational lessons and graduated from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) with honors! Today Marquis is a public speaker and the author of a new book called Beating The System: My Life In Foster Care”.
